Linda Your Questions About Eye Exercises For Strabismus

Linda asks…

After Squint surgery 2.5mnths : my eyes are still not straight?

After Strabismus surgery 2.5mnths : my eyes are still not straight?
I am 22 yrs old and suffering from amblyopia since childhood and my right eye has almost no vision and bends a little inwards. I had a squint surgery to get this inward bending eye straight. After the surgery, I noticed:
a) when i looked straight, the right eye was looking outwards (exotropic).
b) when i looked to the left, the right eye will look straight and NOT move inwards at all.
c) only when i looked to the right, both eyes looked fine.

The doctors said my muscles need to heal and told me to do normal eye exercises for 3 months and that the right eye should be fine by then.

But its 2 1/2 months now since the operation and my eyes are still the same!!!

I am so worried and depressed and don’t know what to do. I don’t want to go for another operation since I already had one squint operation before this on both eyes when I was one year old (which was a failure).

My eyes were just a little squinted before, now its HORRIBLE !!!

Do the exercises… And consult one more eye doctor!

I trusted my first doctor for my lazy eye, he told me it will cure and now he says it wont, so! You need to think that doctors can be wrong too!

Steven Your Questions About Eye Exercises For Strabismus

Steven asks…

antimetropia?OD+3.75 , OS-0.75 – very annoying and difficult to adjust in everyday life …?

the diopter machine read OD:+3.75, OS-0.75. it reflects the reality, i see better in the distance with my right eye but i can’t read with it – and vice-versa.i had strabismus when i was little-i did a lot of eye exercises, then an operation when i was 6.the operation succeded. I had glasses another 2 years – then i didn’t have to wear them anymore. now i’m 28.last year i had a more serios eye exam with the above mentioned readings.i wear glasses again:+1.5 for right eye and zero for the left eye.it’s very annoying because i realize that i’m using a different eye for different type of activity.when i gaze in the distance i look with my right eye, when i read i definitely use only the left eye.(my left eye is not very good with seeing distant objects and i’d like to have this fixed – but the doctor said they don’t want to put a difference larger than 1.5 between od and os.i’d be willing to try both some – for my left eye and more + for my right eye-if that would bring me a better vision!
i don’t want to consider laser or contact lenses yet.
would a prescription with -0.5 for OS and some more + for OD be intolerable? i’d like to be able to see better with both eyes. (even the left eye – which is better has big problems for me,because i can’t see anything clear that’s more than 2 or 3 meters away …)
well.. the doctor didn’t try a higher diopter for my glasses. i started to wear glasses again in november 2006-and had another eye exam which had as a result an increase in my OD value from +1.25 to +1.5. That is after i told her i had strabismus when i was little-she said “well then let’s put +1.5..usually u need more when you have this. “otherwise she would had left it with 1.25. there is a slight improvement in my right eye‘s vision-but not significant.and my left eye is only for reading and writing (actually i do this most of the day,in front of the computer). i’d like to be able o use my right eye also for reading (i sense that i’m not using it-it would feel almost the same if i shut it)-and i’d like to be able to see at distance with my left eye (same,i don’t use it when trying to see a distant object). i moved recently to london so i want to find a good ophthalmologist/optician here.i hope i’ll find some help.this problem might not be too serios, but it’s on my mind constantly!
maybe the doctor was not good i don’t know. I had that explanation twice – from 2 different doctors. (same clinic-but different doctors). both used “no more that 1.5 difference” line… i suppose it’s because i didn’t wear glasses for 20 years and i have to wear glasses again-maybe they meant not from the beginning but they thought of increasing the strength for my right eye later in time. there are many things that worry me-for example-i can choose which eye to use to look at one object-when i use my right eye-my left eye runs towards the nose(my strabismus is back).my night vision is not good either. i did a test trying to touch my pointing fingers in front of my eyes-instead of being tip to tip they were overlapping…the more i think-the more problems i discover…

Unless the doctor’s comment is based on having tried and failed with a larger difference the stance seems unreasonable.

If your right is your established reading eye, as you get older you’re going to need more of the plus in that eye anyway as your accommodation (naturally) fades.
If you have no effective binocular vision, there is no reason not to give each eye its best Rx, except for the cosmetic imbalance between the two eyes, which may well be a minor consideration. Especially as for many social situations you might not be wearing the glasses at all.

If there is binocular vision contact lenses would be the route of first choice, as the anisometropic effect is much reduced with them, both on image size and on relative prismatic effect.

But even with glasses and binocular vision, +1.50 is no fixed limit. I’ve got 3.25 sphere difference between my two eyes. And fairly good binocular vision.

There are at least definite *possiblities*, depending on your exact refraction and binocular status.

OD +3.75, OS-0.75 Both near and farsighted – i need some answers?

the diopter machine read OD:+3.75, OS-0.75. it reflects the reality, i see better in the distance with my right eye but i can’t read with it – and vice-versa.i had strabismus when i was little-i did a lot of eye exercises, then an operation when i was 6.the operation succeded. i would be willing to try glasses with a larger number difference – one with plus and one with minus. now i have a 1.5 difference – i feel there’s no much difference when i have them on – and i’d like to see that difference. is what i have called Anisometropia? where do i find more information-and advice?it’s VERY annoying to see so differently with each eye-it seems i have to adapt my eyes to each thing that i look at…
i don’t have any problem with wearing glasses – if they would give me a better confort… i don’t want to think of lasik or other surgical interventions – and i think i wouldn’t be confortable with contact lenses either. i need advice on glasses…
i was still searching in the internet.
I am looking for Antimetropia … – please anyone knows to give me a solution? some advice – some personal experience…
i want to avid laser treatment…
i would choose that only in an emergency situation, i think…
i already had a strabismus surgery on both eyes when i was little – and it was a successful one – i don’t want to push my luck too much…

admin answers:

A significant difference in the power between the two eyes is called anisometropia.
The problem caused by this is that the more “plus” spectacle lens makes a bigger image on the retina, and the brain finds it difficult to fuse the two images.
You should ask your optician about contact lenses, as the image size is not so much of a problem with contact lenses.
