Your Questions About An Impaired Use Of Language

Mary asks…

What do you think about Politically Correct (PC) language? How much is too much?

Obviously, we don’t to use blatantly offense terms such as the “n -word.” But, are we getting to a point where we use so much PC language that it’s difficult to ascertain what we are even talking about?

This question was somewhat sparked by the “r-word” debate. I can understand the offensive part, of course, but it seems to me that it’s more other people’s misuse of something that was initially a benign medical term. It is kind of like the use of the word “gay” and how people keep using it to mean something bad when that was not the original intent.

The PC jumble gets so confusing. Terms like “cognitively impaired” could mean any number of conditions. The technical definition for “retarded” is delayed/slowed and isn’t one of the PC terms “cognitively delayed.”? How is that any different in meaning from “mentally retarded”?

I realize I myself am often not the most socially aware person in the world, but all this just seems a little unnecessary to me and I wonder what terms are going to be changed next. How are we going to keep up with all this?

Your thoughts please….no fights though. :)

admin answers:

What may be benign to you hurts others to the core of their being. That should be enough to not use it. Forget about what is PC or not – think about what hurts. The R-word hurts the people it is used to describe. No one wants to be called that. It has become hate speech no matter what its original intention was.

Daniel asks…

discrimination or not ?

My friend and I were at our local k mart when we were approached by the security guard and told to stop trying to shoplift ( which we weren’t doing ) and he walked away we found the store manager and told him what had happened we did not appreciate what we were accused of the manager then talked to the guard and came back to us the guard told him that we were using signals with each other to steal I told the manager no we weren’t we were using sign language which we often use with all of our friends ( we had to learn it for a play in high school. ) to communicate the manager did nothing to correct the situation. Now is this discrimination on the hearing impaired (even thou we are not.) I just don’t want this happening again especially to the real hearing impaired or should I just leave it alone and do nothing what should I do?

admin answers:

Absolutely – it happens all the time. I’ve been denied service, given poor service or just plain ignored when using sign language. I know people who have had service people try to rip them off – ring up items twice, charge them for items they didn’t eat in a restaurant, and worse – because someone saw them using sign and assumed they were an idiot who didn’t know better. Many Deaf people have stories of being out with a hearing friend, talking in sign, and having the hearing friend report that the employees of a place were saying awful things about them because they were using sign. Some of this has gotten better in recent years, but there is still far too much discrimination.

FYI: This is called audism, which means discrimination against a person or group due to their status as Deaf or hard of hearing.

Charles asks…

IEP test accommodations on standardized tests?

We are giving all of our students Aimsweb tests. This is a standardized test. I have special ed students in my class and have been told that I cannot allow them to use any accommodations because the test is standardized. I have asked and was told that my visually impaired (legally blind)student who cannot read anything without a very large font and a magnification overlay must take the test in point 12 font as it is provided. Also I was told that a student who uses sign language must read the test out loud even though he is deaf, uses sign and has no speech. Is this a violation of IDEA law or is their stand legal by stating it is a standardized test and allowing accommodations will skew with the results. It seems unfair to insist that students who need accommodations be denied these in testing situations. particularly when the accommodations are part of the IEP

Thanks
It does not make sense to me either nor does it seem fair

In the state that I teach we are required by the “higherups” who sit in power, (Department of ED) to give these tests. They are used to determine if the schools and/ or district are making adiquate yearly progress.

admin answers:

It is absolutely a violation..

Their 504 plans or IEP should stipulate what accommodations are given for the test

the only thing you can’t do is alter the CONTENT of the test..
It can be given orally, in braille, on a special magnifyer..a person can use sign language..

They can take the test in a separate room, have extra time, ahve someone write the answers they give

Thomas asks…

Can / will a doctor call cps because a child fell of their bike?

3 months ago my daughter fell off her bike and was in the waiting room to been seen by a doctor within 15 minutes of falling.
She was ok no broken bones, a few scratches, and spent a few minutes with the doctor looking at her x ray pics because she was fascinated with seeing pictures of her bones. She was begging to go and ride her bike some more.

About a week after that I find a cps card laying on my porch that I share with a neighbor , the card simply stated the workers name and that they work for cps with the words ‘call me please’ written on the back. Since the card was laying on the porch I wasn’t sure if it was for me or not so I called the number and dialed the extension. No answer, since I wasn’t sure if it was for me,I left no message.

Now over two months later I get a certified letter from the cps worker asking that I call her and that she had tried repeatedly to contact my by coming to my door. I have since called and left v. mails for her with no response.

My question is would a doctor call cps because a child falls of their bike? My daughter is hearing impaired and doesn’t speak clearly enough for most people to understand, and she uses sign language. When the doctor asked her what happened she signed and spoke as best she could so the doctor had to rely on me to translate. I dint know if this made the doctor think that I was trying to control what she was saying or if all doctors report every accident a child has. I also don’t know my next step in communicating with the cps worker, or my rights regarding the matter.

admin answers:

A doctor can most definitely call. In fact they are required by law to report anything that could be suspected abuse. It doesn’t mean they think you abused your child, but like others have said, there are too many cases of people’s children “falling down the stairs, off their bike, etc.” It’s nothing to worry about and as far as the case worker not returning your calls, try and call the main number and speak to a supervisor about the matter.

Helen asks…

depressed/down in the dumps pls help!?

i have alot of problems..in work (because there are some psycho colleagues that try to sabotage and backstab me and my colleague-***-friend) and at home.

but the ones thats troubling me most is the relationships with my family and relatives..my relationships with them have become very strained as i feel they do not listen to me whenever i try to explain myself, either to get myself out of trouble or just to let them know how i feel.

one thing thats causing the problem is that im hearing-impaired (both ears), i dont hear things well, and sometimes i dont even hear instructions given to me. for example my mum told me to buy two things for her, which i mistook as her saying she’ll buy them herself. when i didnt buy them, she blew up at me. i know its cos she is very stressed, having to handle all problems alone (she’s divorced) and having to handle my grand dad’s illness.

i have a short fuse as well, and then when she was shouting at me over this, i also kinda blew up, didnt shout, but my tone wasnt right. it didn’t help that my job is giving me stress as well, having to handle the psychos in my job, who make every day difficult for my friend and i.

i have been an irresponsible brat (even now, sometimes). this causes people (especially my relatives) to think that i intentionally defy them. sometimes i’m unknowingly irresponsible, like i lose track of time when i use the computer, for eg my bro wants to use it for studies, and i say ’5 mins’ but in fact i drag until 30 mins without realising it.

and then they think im inconsiderate. i know i havent been the model child, in fact i’v been the model rebel child.

im 21 this year. i’m working, so i dont take money from my mum (as expected). but i hvnt contributed to the household fees as im taking driving lessons and the lessons are draining out my funds. the driving fees in my country are no joke. im serious. i had told my mum before, that once i pass my test i’ll start contributing, as i do not have the cash to spare right now as im funding my own language course (taking up another language from scratch).

but whenever she’s angry she’ll start calling me names, stuff like im an unfilial kid since i didnt contribute money. but i have explained to her, many many times i cannot afford to now, and she still cant get it in her head.

all my relatives are like that.. im getting really tired of all of them, i find im withdrawing from everyone. even my relationships with friends have become strained. i have lost all confidence in people cos if i cant even sustain a trustful relationship with relatives.. what more of friends??

i am afraid of losing my friendships. but i really cannot handle it anymore. my heart is slowly but surely hardening to become uncaring. i dont know how to stop or reverse this. pls heellp!!

i am under alot of mental stress because i cannot make myself heard. even if i want to change my character for the better, i cannot, because i find all these strain so hard, so fruitless. i am already naturally soft and lisp due to my hearing problem (its severe)

im also an emotional eater and i find myself ballooning to blimp-like proportions day by day..i’v tried chugging down water but it doesnt deaden the pain it just makes me feel so bloated i could puke. my self-esteems gg down the drain as im too fat, and everyone’s making bad remarks about my size.

admin answers:

The first step to getting appropriate treatment, for depression or any other emotional problem, is a complete psychological evaluation to determine whether you have a depressive illness, and if so, what type of depression. Consultation with a psychologist will include a review of your physical health history. Some medications as well as some medical conditions can cause symptoms of depression, so your psychologist will ask your family physician to rule out these possibilities if other physical symptoms are evident.

Lastly, the psychological diagnostic evaluation will include a mental status examination to assess the full range of psychological symptoms and problems. This will help identify any other psychological problems that might be present, and will help determine the most appropriate treatment for you.

Treatment choice will depend on the outcome of the evaluation. Most people do well with psychotherapy, but some require treatment with antidepressants in addition to psychotherapy. Medication can allow you to to gain relatively quick symptom relief, if you are experiencing severe and disabling symptoms. However, medication does not “cure” the depression, it only treats the symptoms. If you are depressed, you need psychotherapy to help you to learn more effective ways to deal with life’s problems, and to change the negative thoughts and attitudes that have caused you to develop depression.

So make your first move.Dont wait too long before it get worse. You are not alone, there is help around the corner, never give up.
Take care as always and God bless you.

admin answers:

I reckon write your mum a letter…

Secondly, go to the Human Resources Manager of your job, or whatever manager is responsible for workplace conflict and raise the issue there. If you come from a country where there are trade unions which support employees of your particular industry then seek advice from them on how to resolve it, or what to do if this fails. But i would speak to a manager. I would be extremely objective, and not be overcome by emotion.

I would start with “well… I have noticed that xx & yy have been doing things such as xxx and yyy and i am feeling uncomfortable in the workplace. I would like to be able to come to work and perform tasks to the best of my ability and i feel that this kind of behaviour affects my ability to do so”… Or check out online to see what other ways you could express yourself..

Family is a harder one… It is extremely difficult to be in control of your own life if you are sensitive about certain things and your family is not supporting you… It can make you turn to emotional eating or other things…

Is there any way for you to stay somewhere else?

Otherwise write a letter to her. Be objective… What you have written is pretty good… Acknowledging that she has things on her plate that are bothing her, but these xxxxxxxxx are the things that have been going on in your life and you would like her support… Also in future if she can write what she needs down for you, if its important… So you can see it…

Also… Rework your finances… If your mother needs financial support, then perhaps the language course can be put on hold… Or finish the semester and put it on hold… Driving lessons i guess you can justify because they will allow you to be mobile, but it depends on how many you are taking, and if you keep failing the driving test… This might sound unfair, but if your mother is struggling, you are technically an adult and should probably contribute something because she has no legal liability to keep you in the house anymore… Draw up a budget and see if there is a way you can contribute something… Of some amount, include it in the letter (whatever conclusion you arrive at)…

The emotional eating is a bigger issue… Start exercising, you will feel a lot better… Maybe a friend can start coming on walks with you and you can both support each other… The exercise will release endorphins which make you feel good, so the more intensive the training is the better you feel, but i dont suggest going hard out straight away… You need to work up to that point…

Also try relaxing music, meditation techniques and online resources to try help you through the tendency to be an emotional eater… But you have to decide that you are not going to let other people destroy your self esteem and you will not allow yourself to abuse your body with overeating… That you are a worthy person, misunderstood, but worthy… Resilient… Strong and you will get stronger with each day that you stick to it… You wont let yourself spiral downwards any further from today on… You are going to reinvent yourself, read… Find new ways of handling situations at work, with family, with yourself…

We all have bad days, but u have to tell yourself in your head ‘i am worth it, i am a fantastic person, everyone else can get f***ed, they are not going to get to me’

and when you start achieving what you want… Improve… It will be easier and easier to believe those words, cause u will be making them come true…

All the best (make sure u read up on stuff online to help yourself out, or see someone who can help you with these things)… It’s worth it and you are worth it!!

Donna asks…

How to find friends that really care about me?

I am 31 years old and am somewhat good looking. I am a little overweight and am 5′ 1″. I wear glasses and am hearing impaired/deaf. Anytime I strike up a conversation, I get shy. I tried fighting it, but many people make fun of me anyway. I tend to not hear what is said. I do not get invited to many outings and I am a moral person ( I do not sleep around, do drugs or smoke, or use bad language– I never have). I have walked up to girls and guys and tried to start up conversations, but they never lead anywhere. I try changing the conversations to different subjects, but people are never very interested. I have one advantage over most men in that I have been around the opposite sex longer ( I was raised in a all-girl family). However, many of them pick at me and dominate me. What do I do about trying t make friends? Do not just sy to forget about everything because I tried that; it doesn’t work. I start back at square one. I tried calling some of the people up at home to talk and it is always an inconvenient time ( no, not at four in the morning). Any advice would be helpful. By th way, I can speak English rather well for someone who is hearing-impaired and I am fluent in American Sign Language.
I just realized I have misspellings. No, I am not retarded; I just do not type very well.
To jlb: Thanks, but I already do that. I already think that may be part of my problem. I just wonder if that kind of attitude is wrong.

admin answers:

Are there hobbies or activities you have that involve other being where other people are doing the same thing? Shopping? Certain movies? You might have better chances of meeting people with same interests who would be more eager to meet new people. I know one thing is, I started to attract more people into my life when I became inspired to just have fun and be myself no matter how “weird” it may seem to others. I ended up in the psyche ward (again!)…only this time, since I had such a “screw-it-i-don’t-care” attitude, I just began to speak my mind…mostly in a fooling around way….not in a way to offend others…but in a way to just be silly…I found that in doing so, I could make myself and others laugh. People really really do get a kick out of pure HONESTY….You don’t see honesty anymore so now it seems like people just appreciate it and wanna be your friend. I know a guy who goes to AA. He was all bummed out about falling off the wagon again and was all worried about facing his AA group again when he got back to going. A guy came up to him and said, “Hey! Whereya been?!” And my friend just blatantly said with NO qualms..”Drinkin…” And the guy got such a kick outta his honesty that he became really interested in being his friend. HONESTY is very attractive. Showing people that you have no interest in putting up any kind of front. When people get the sense that you are not trying to impress them, they feel relaxed, I think. I dunno. Give it a try sometime. Be blatantly honest about something that most people would probably try to hide about themselves. See what happens. See if it breaks the ice.

George asks…

Does Obama have the autism?

impaired ability to make friends with peers (he is enemy with all conservatives)
absence or impairment of imaginative and social play (he is trying every tired capitalist trick in the book with fail)
stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language (“CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE”)
restricted patterns of interest that are abnormal in intensity or focus (the repetition of that phrase in his campaign, not to mention he has an abnormal interest in destroying American society with lassiez-faire free-market hypercapitalism of the Wall Street flavour)
preoccupation with certain objects or subjects (capitalism)
inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals (he urinates and pisses all over Marx’s works and runs all of these Conservative sock-puppets on Y!A all day in the White House while doing nothing)

admin answers:

Who isn’t a enemy to most all conservatives ? Considering Reps /Cons provoke that reaction.
Actually I think Obama panders far too much to the so called Right ( Reich ) Wing .

Betty asks…

Conflict with my brother & sister-in-law is hurting my parents?

Hello,

My family got along pretty well up until recently. My brother and sister-in-law recently decided to stop speaking to our side of the family because of something I said to them and they wont let my mother and father see their grandson and my father blames me. We used to babysit my nephew (1.5 yrs old). My sister-in-law decided that she would teach him sign language (He is not hearing impaired). We did not have a problem with it until one day she dropped him off and told us that he was sick. She said that if he doesnt sign for food then we werent to give him any food. I asked her why she is choosing to use sign language & she told me that she was sick of him whining at her. I told her (while we were sitting at the table and I was doing some paperwork) that she needs to be careful to use sign in conjunction with verbal language so that he doesnt become dependent on sign. She told me that she didnt need the opinion of someone younger than her telling her how to raise her kid. I told her that she needed to grow up and just be careful. She called my brother at work, & he left work early, rushed to our house, picked my nephew up, and left with little word (my mom had no idea what was going on). He later told me when he came to the house to pick up a rifle that we werent to babysit anymore and that we need to apologize to his wife. I told him, (quite arrogantly), that they needed to get off their high horse because no one yelled at her or was attacking her and just sit down and talk to us because my mom thought they were blaming her and she really needed to see our nephew right now, (my grandmother just passed away a few days after the incident). I saw her and my nephew at a community activity and she kept picking up her son and walking away anytime we met eyes. It has been a month, and my father was talking about what happened and told me that if I hadn’t run my big mouth, he would be seeing his grandson right now. He told me that I ruined the family. What gets me is that I have always been supportive of my brother’s relationship with her and was always on their side. When I disagreed, I always kept my mouth shut. I have never raised my voice to her and told her that the reason why I brought it up was that I noticed my nephew wasnt using words as often and would sign instead of verbalizing. I am not a confrontational person and feel guilty that my mom cannot see my nephew. My father is about to disown me, and for some reason I cannot bring myself to simply tell her Im sorry and that I had no reason to bring it up. I need some help to sort this out. Thank you.
Wow, I think I need to mention that I was not telling her that she couldnt DO something, I told her to be careful OF something. In addition, we were the assigned babysitters and I noticed a difference in his behavior and progress. Oh, I am an Education major (Childhood education). She has no problem listening to the advise of her sister-in-law on the other side of the family and it was the first time I had said something…I dont think some of you are feeling me on the situation, but then again I am biased, lol…
So far, you guys are telling me that its ok for us to babysit, but if we see a change in behavior, Im supposed to keep my mouth shut?

admin answers:

This is, of course, an extreme reaction on their part. But it’s clear that, if you want your parents to be able to see their grandson, you’re going to have to kiss up. That’s the decision you have to make: Is it worth it? If it is, simply tell her, “I’m sorry I overstepped my bounds.” I wish I could say this is going to get better, but that’s unlikely.

Your Questions About An Impaired Use Of Language

Nancy asks…

what does it mean when i dream in sign language over and over?

i’m considered profoundly deaf (40% hearing in each ear). as a child i had normal hearing but over the years (i’m 25) i slowly lost it. i stopped using sign language by second grade because i no longer needed it after i was moved out of the class for the hearing impaired. i needed it to communicate with the other students. i have never had dreams of using sign language before, but recently i keep having them.

in the dream i’m always speaking while using sign language which is common for those who use it and can also hear. i’m always using it with ease and i’m totally relaxed in each dream. i have noticed that when i use it in the dream i feel like the person understands me better than if i had only spoke to them.

i’m a firm believer in paying attention to my dreams because i believe it’s way of communicating with myself what i’m not immediately addressing while awake. this one has me stumped though. i can’t tell if i’m wishing i was signing on a more regular basis because i’ve always cherished that i could sign or if i wish i was a kid again (only time i used sign language) or maybe i’m trying to show people who i am and it’s part of who i am.

any guesses or theories?

admin answers:

For the same reason that I dream in French sometimes.
English is my second language, but I’ve spoken it (without an accent) since I was 5 years old. In fact no one ever seems to know that English is not my first language, that’s how hardwired it is in my brain.
Yet sometimes I dream in French.
I think this is perfectly normal. It’s just the parts of your brain that use sign language are being activated in your dreams.

“There is no fundamental reality save but for that which we choose to accept as real.” – agree or disagree?

Interested in discussion of this concept. It‘s like a cosmic catch 22, I think – if you accept it, then you‘re admitting that you only accept it because you choose to, not because it‘s real. Yet if you don’t, then you‘re saying you can choose not to believe and somehow, your choice not to believe is more relevant than someone else’s choice TO believe. :-/

It’s too vague of a question. I can see reality before my eyes without having to accept it as real, so I don’t agree.

Does a week-old baby accept reality as real, and if it doesn’t, is there no reality to it?

Brilliant beautiful DIY – your project, if you choose to accept it is to build a bat house using?

wooden pallets. Any suggestions for construction. Have a basic idea of the dimensions. Thanks for your advice.

admin answers:

Basically you want to construct a long narrow box with one open end. Construct the box frame (three sides only, the fourth will be the down end for the entrance, from the approximately 2×4 cross supports (use solid ones if possible without forklift cut outs.Nail together forming a U shape. Next take a 2×4 with forklift cut outs and nail it across the open end of the U about 8 inches from the open end. Next nail the flat pallet boards across the U aligning with the closed end of the U frame, so that the board overlap the cut out holes of the open end cross brace. Do only one side for now. Mount the filled frame side to the post(s) to support the bat house off the ground about 3 feet. Location should be shady and out of the hot sun. Once the box is mounted, then fill remaining side with flat pallet boards the same as for the other side which is mounted to the poles. The flat board should be as close together as possible, but don’t try to seal the gaps as they provide ventilation and the bats won’t mind a little light.

The following link provides several bat house plans which you can modify for the local residents and for the materials you want to use. The pallet boards are good as they are rough sawn and will provide plenty of places for the bats to get a grip on. Good luck and the bats are fun to watch chase and catch the bugs in your back yard.

Sandy asks…

How is it “free will” to choose to accept or reject God, if his omniscience has already told him the outcome?

Are you saying I have the power to SURPRISE God by changing my mind and do something he CAN’T foresee?

If “yes”, how can you call him “omniscient”?

If “no”, how am I in any way making a “choice”, rather than simply being railroaded through my assigned, pre-programmed responses?

admin answers:

Precisely! And there you have it Rev.

Also, will I be allowing you to exert free will if I put a gun to your head, give you two choices, tell you the one that will save your life, and then demand that you choose?

If I tell you not to press that button, whatever you do!!! Do not press that button. Do you think you might press the button?

Now. Whatever you do within the next few minutes, absolutely DO NOT imagine an albino monkey flying off the empire state building. Don’t visualize it! You’ll burn in hell if you do.
