Wow! I have never scolded anyone for posting a question! You should know these answers. If you don’t, you should not be driving.

David asks…

Compound Bow questions!?

1.) I’m looking to upgrade from a youth bow and was wondering what is a good second bow that is affordable. I am a college student and don’t have a lot of disposable income. This for sure won’t be the last bow I buy so I’m not looking for a top of the line last bow I’ll ever buy type of thing.

2.) How do I figure out what the draw length should be for me? I don’t have the exact measurements for my arm span, but can find out easily.

3.) I have a problem with my shooting which is that my dominant eye is my left eye, but I prefer to shoot right handed (drawing back with my right arm that is) because my right arm is stronger. So is there any way to correct my vision to shoot right handed? ie. aiming a little to the right? I don’t think I like that sound of that. Or am I going to have to start to exercising my left arm more and buy a left handed bow.

4.) For deer hunting should I be looking in the range of 50-60# or 60-70# range. I know that 40# is all that is really needed to kill a deer with a well placed shot.

admin answers:

1. I wouldn’t go for Hoyt, they’re usually a bit expensive. PSE I agree with, they make cheap bows. Look at stuff on ebay, you might get lucky. Always watch for the seller’s rep.

2. Rule of thumb is wingspan /2.5. Wingspan measured finger tip to finger tip

3. First thing, you shouldn’t be pulling with your arms, but exercising your arm is a whole lot faster than reprogramming your brain to switch eye dominance. It is possible to rewire the brain, but it takes at least a year of intensive practice to do it. Even then it’s not a guarantee that your old dominant eye won’t take over if you cock your head a certain way. What you do is you tape over your dominant eye and shoot for long periods of time. After a while your brain will accept the new dominant eye. This exercise also depend on how old you are.

4. 50-60# is plenty for deer. It’ll let you practice more often, and shoot more arrows.
