Food for Sight: How Your 20/20 Vision Diet Can Help You Improve Your Eyesight

Article by C Oh

In terms of maintaining good eyesight and preventing eye problems, the saying “you are what you eat” cannot be more relevant. Your eye is one of the most complex and delicate organs, even among the sensory organs. Just as a bodybuilder cannot succeed without a proper diet, your vision cannot be maintained or sustained without proper nutrients. In this article, you can find out how you can literally build your way back to your natural 20/20 vision by providing the right fuel and building blocks for your incredible seeing machine.

The two key nutrients that help your eyesight are protein and vitamins. Protein is the main constituent of essential eye parts such as eyeball and lens, and is essential in stimulating the synthesis of collagen, which forms cornea, retina and sclera. The magic ingredient here is taurine, a kind of amino acid which consists protein. It helps the development of retina and repairs cornea damages resulting from ultraviolet light and dust. Fish and clams are rich in taurine, yet it is recommended that you get protein from various sources such as tofu, soybeans, cheese, eggs, and meat.

Vitamin A helps your eye recuperate and ease fatigue. Insufficient intake might result in not only eyesight problems, but also diseases and ailments such as nyctalopia(night blindness), xerophthalmia(dry eyes) and conjunctivitis. Animal liver, eel, egg yolk, carrots, spinach, and other green vegetables contain carotene, which is converted to vitamin A inside the body. Vitamin E prevents oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids which are good for eye health. It is contained in mushroom, almond, milk and liver.

Vitamin B’s are also vital for visual neurons in that they help the body absorb protein and carbohydrates and stimulate cell growth. Vitamin B1 and B12, which converts glucose into energy and prevents anemia respectively, are found in pork, mackerel, and brown rice. B2 is contained in liver, egg, and mushrooms. B6, which is indispensable in metabolizing protein and fat, is richly found in soybeans, dairy, mackerel, and salmon.

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant which helps prevent cataract, is contained in sweet potato, fruits, and green vegetables. It is recommended that you don’t cook these foods for too long, since vitamin C is easily degenerated under heat. The caveat here is that, since vitamin B’s and C are water-soluble and therefore not stored in the body for a long period of time, you need to make sure you eat these foods regularly.

Vision Exercises Improve Eyesight Naturally! Seriously?,

September 26, 2011

Vision disorders are so common that we barely think about them as real health issues. For instance, according to the American Optometric Association nearsightedness is having an effect on “nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population”. To explain, every 3rd person you know can’t see well far away objects.

Well, right now I am that 3rd person wearing correction glasses because of nearsightedness. There’s only so much that medication can do for my declining eyesight. If you are like me, you most likely looked for alternative vision therapies. That’s what I did as well and there they’re – easy vision exercises, eye movement and targeting routines all claiming to improve vision naturally. “Vision exercises can improve vision naturally! Seriously?” I though and decided to discover more about these alternative approaches to vision improvement.

It all began with a book printed just about a hundred years ago. William Bates MD “The Cure of Imperfect Eyesight by Treatment Without Glasses” paved the road to quick profits for many corporations and self-pronounced vision therapists. Bates concepts are the backbone of just about all current vision therapies promising to naturally improve vision.

Contrary to scientific evidence, Bates visual acuity improvement strategies are primarily based on the postulate that some of the most typical eyesight disorders (myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism) are caused, not to the basic shape of the eye and its elements, but to functional problems of the action of the eye muscles. The reality is there is very small medical evidence to back up such claims.

I discovered that modern medicine knows for sure what the reasons for the most common eye diseases are. The bitter reality is that very few eyesight conditions are only caused by malfunction of the eye muscles and thus can be fixed naturally by “training” these muscles. Just one sane method of eye training and eye exercises – orthoptics, when carried out under professional optometric and clinical supervision can correct coordination or binocular eyesight issues such as crossed eyes and amblyopic eyes. For all else, although there might be individual success stories, the outcome of such methodologies are highly controversial.

On the other hand, I came across systematic evidence that many vision problems are strongly related to diet and way of life. For instance, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), sponsored by the NEI, found age-related macular degeneration as a “nutrition-responsive disorder”. Various other smaller medical trials and medical research find that individual diet and lifestyle patterns together with hereditary traits are among the top contributors to the development of specific eyesight problems. The keys to prevention, slowing their development or reducing their symptoms are also in correct nourishment and healthful way of life.

So, is there a one hundred percent warranted strategy to improve vision naturally? Reading half-truths about eyesight and the “magical” outcomes of eye exercises, I made a decision that something should be done. The primary idea of the new blog I have created,, is to raise awareness about that debatable subject. It is an fair info source about the trustworthiness and effectiveness of the most common therapeutic techniques that claim to improve eyesight naturally.

If you want to Naturally Improve Eyesight, then you need to go to and find out the honest truth about eyesight and some proved paths to improve your eyesight naturally.

It is advised that everyone wear sunglasses during the summer and protective goggles when performing any task that might result in materials coming in contact with your eyes. There are three theraputic herbs we will focus on in this article: Bilberry Extract, Aspalathus, and Mahonia Grape Extract. We will also discuss two vitamins important to eyesight: Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Finally, we’ll take a look at two important minerals: Zinc and Fish Oil.

Bilberry is a theraputic herb that contains anthocyanosides that may decrease the rate of macular degeneration and prevent the occurence of other retinal conditions. Bilberry protects veins and arteries in the eye, and helps with night vision.

Aspalathus is a powerful herb native to South Africa. this herb, also know as rooibos contains antioxidants similar to bilberry and can promote eye health as well as improve immune function.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to slow the onset of macular degeneration – the most common cause of loss of eyesight, and protect the retina.

Vitamin C is also an antioxidant and it works along side Vitamin E to protect tissues and improve eye health.

Zinc is an essential mineral required by all cells in the body. Zinc helps with the function of strengthening the cells of the eye.

Fish oil contains powerful compounds that can prevent macular degeneration and as well as other eye problems.

Please keep in mind that supplements are not likely to be helpful in serious and advanced eye disorders, but they can play a an important role in mild to moderate cases of visual decline that occurs normally with the aging process.

Eyesight is really a gift of God, and the value of eyesight is well known to a person who is blind. Thus it is often said that eyesight is as important as breathing. It is because of our eyesight that we are able to appreciate the beauty of this colorful world. Some common eyesight problems are as follows.

People with myopia cannot see distant objects clearly. Headache is a symptom of myopia. Eye glasses, contact lenses and Lasik surgery can combat myopia.

2. Hyperopia or farsightedness is caused due to shorter eyeball that causes light to be focused behind the retina instead of the surface. People with hyperopia can see distant objects more clearly in contrast to nearer objects. Again eye glasses, contact lenses and Lasik surgery can treat hyperopia.

3. Astigmatism is another common eye problem. It is caused when the shape of the eye ball becomes oblong instead of spherical. This causes two light points instead of one to be focused on the retina. Blurry vision and headaches are symptoms of astigmatism. Toric lenses, eye glasses and refractive surgery can treat astigmatism.
