Your Questions About An Impaired Asset

James asks…

a. Explain why Food Lion must write down the current carrying value of its unprofitable stores.?

For several years, a number of Food Lion, Inc., grocery stores were unprofitable. The company closed, and continues to close, some of these locations. It is apparent that the company will not be able to recover the cost of the assets associated with the closed stores. Thus, the current value of these impaired assets must be written down (see the Case in Point on page 381). A recent Food Lion income statement reports a $9.5 million charge against income pertaining to the write-down of impaired assets.

a. Explain why Food Lion must write down the current carrying value of its unprofitable stores.
b. Explain why the recent $9.5 million charge to write down these impaired assets is considered a noncash expense.

admin answers:

Why? They’re worth less.

Accounting question regarding impairments?

I’m trying to do some journal entries for accounting and I have a question. If we impair an asset, then need to reesablish the asset, I believe that we Debit Accumulated Depreciation but where does the Credit go? Gain on reestablishment of Asset? What’s a better account name?

admin answers:

Once you take an impairment charge you create a new cost basis for the asset. You do not “reestabllish” the asset. For example a company closes a factory with a cost basis of $10 million that is now impaired and you take a $5 million impairment charge. The cost basis is now $5 million. Two years later someone finds oil in the area and the value of the land alone is now $10 million. You do not write up the asset back to its previous value.

To answer your question, if you were going to do that you would debit the asset and credit “gain on ……”

George asks…

Intangibles and amortization?

Vinay Company purchases several intangible assets, as follows.

Asset Purchase Cost
Licence $390,000
Patent 82,000
Copyright 250,000

The following information is also available:

* In addition to the costs listed above, there were legal fees of $32,000 associated with the licence acquisition. The licence is valid in perpetuity, and sales of the products produced under the licence have been strong and are expected to continue at the same level for many decades.
* While the patent has a legal life of 20 years, technological changes are expected to render it worthless after about five years.
* The copyright is good for another 30 years, but nearly all the related sales are expected to occur during the next eight years.

Required:

Calculate the annual amortization, if any, that should be recorded for each of these intangible assets.

Round all amounts to nearest whole dollar. Enter 0 or leave the input box blank if no amount is required.

Patent $
Copyright
Licence

Show how the intangible assets section of the balance sheet would be presented four years after acquisition of these assets, assuming that there has been no evidence that their values have been impaired.

My comments:
* In addition to the costs listed above, there were legal fees of $32,000 associated with the licence acquisition. The licence is valid in perpetuity, and sales of the products produced under the licence have been strong and are expected to continue at the same level for many decades.
I would capitalise the legal fees as well, so that makes the cost of the licence $422,000. Since this is an intangible asset with an indefinite life, it would not be amortised. You need to test for impairment, but the question tells you there is no impairment, so the carrying amount will remain at $422,000.

* While the patent has a legal life of 20 years, technological changes are expected to render it worthless after about five years.
This intangible asset has a finite useful life, but you should always take the shorter of the legal and economic useful lives for amortization purposes, so this one would be amortized over 5 yrs, i.e. Giving an amortization expense each year of $16,400, or $65,600 for 4 yrs.

* The copyright is good for another 30 years, but nearly all the related sales are expected to occur during the next eight years.
Again, this has a finite useful life, and again, use the shorter of the legal and economic useful lives, so each year’s amortization is $31,250, or $125,000 for 4 yrs.

Calculate the annual amortization, if any, that should be recorded for each of these intangible assets.

Round all amounts to nearest whole dollar. Enter 0 or leave the input box blank if no amount is required.

Your Questions About An Impaired Use Of Language Is Known As

Betty asks…

Do I have anything to live for? Mental impaired and unable to make friends..?

Hello. I am a 20 year old male. English is a second language and I am sorry if I do not make enough sense.

When I was in grammar school, I had behavior and hyperactive problems that led my father and grandfather to take me to the hospital. The doctors said I was a mental retarded. I am bad at everything I try to do because of this, and my father hates me. I have no skills and cannot do anything. I got A grades in school and he said “You should enter the platform”, but I still was not accepted.

I was thinking about college, but I am not good at anything and not interested in anything. My father does not want to pay for a stupid to go to college and get F grades.

I cannot make any friends. I have been a loner with only few close friends my entire life. Its like everybody knows what a stupid I am and avoid me. Nobody shares interest or is [shallow?]. Respond please if that does not make sense and I will look for a better word.

I think I want to suicide but want to use that as a last resort. My only friends are onto bigger and better things now. What do I have to live for, if anything? Why do other mental retarded want to keep living? Thank you answerers.

admin answers:

Even though your English skills are poor, you are still clearly not properly diagnosed as a person with an intellectual disability/ mental retardation. If sounds to me like you have a huge self-esteem issue. If you got A grades in school you are a capable person. If you are not interested in anything – of course you have no friends. You need to have things to talk about- interests to share to have friends. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start doing something – anything – and get some pleasure out of it.

You have talents and you just need to dig a little deeper to find them. Do you have any interests? I have a wonderful friend who doctors called “stupid” she finds joy in painting ant actually has sold many of them locally. Find your passion and expound upon it. You are a courageous son of god and he is there to answer your questions. Pray sincerely and you will receive an answer.

Help with translation English – Spanish?

I am busy doing an assignment and need to get this parapraph accurately translated. I am just struggling with the very last part (“delivers a stronger stimulus to the impaired apparatus” (Paradis, 1983, p. 637)”). I dont know what exactly the author means by IMPAIRED APPARATUS. This is the original text and following is the transaltion I have (help me find the correct meaning of those words here):

Beyond the early notions of native-language status, language use and emotional significance of a language, and their respective influence on language localization and recovery from aphasia, langage automaticity and type of bilingualism have also been proposed as factors that influence language localization and organization in bi- and multilingual speakers´ brain. In a precise contradiction of Pitres, Kainz (1960, in Paradis, 1983) proposed that the language most vulnerable to aphasia in bi- and multilingual speakers was the language that was most automatic and used most unconsciously. he stated that we converse in the native language automatically, without conscious reflection, whereas a later learned language, which requires more volitional and conscious effort to use, “delivers a stronger stimulus to the impaired apparatus” (Paradis, 1983, p. 637).

Translation:

I agree with Raqui’s statement and Mai Tai’s translation of the phrase in question and suggestion that more changes need to be made. You don’t always need to keep long, unwieldy sentence structures in English when translating. You have made separate sentences at the end, but not at the beginning where it needed it more. Also, watch out for typos like converge for conversa.

Your Questions About Carnitine Deficiency

August 20, 2012

Steven asks…

Pretty Important Medical Question?!?

So, in January, I had a freak case of Rhabdomyolysis. I’m 16 years old, and I went to the hospital presented with myoglobinuria (if that’s how you say it). No pain, no stiffness (after I exercised I had pretty bad stiffness, but it went away the next day), nothing when I was admitted…. They did a blood test, and my CK levels came out at 492,000. My potassium levels were also high…I think…either high or low. I was hospitalized, and my CK levels dropped at about 120,000 per day…and 4 days later I was released from the hospital. It was kind of odd, because from what my doc said, people with rhabdo in my situation already have renal damage, and are usually in the ICU on dialysis. I was discharged perfectly fine. My doctor, nor none of the Emergency Medicine Residents could figure out why I got it. My family physician really wanted me to go see a GI doc and a Renal doc. I went to go see a GI doc and he found nothing. I knew something was up, and since I’m in a Emergency Med program at my school, I decided to look into to things. After looking for a few months, I think I have something called Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase 2 deficiency (CPT-2 deficiency).

Website since the disorder is rare:

http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/carnitine-palmitoyltransferase-2-deficiency

I do get muscle stiffness and pain a lot when I exercise…..Many of the symptoms it gave me, explained me perfectly, especially with the rhabdo. So what’s the next step? Do I call my doctor immediately, or can I just tell her at my next physical?

admin answers:

You certainly need to see your own doctor again, but not necessarily in a hurry. Even if you do have CPT-2 deficiency (and there are other possibilities) there has to be a trigger for the rhabdomyolysis. If you avoid fasting and energetic exercise, you will be fine until the next appointment. When you talk to your own doctor, I suggest you avoid presenting your own diagnosis (if I were your doctor, I would be tempted to respond by suggesting you organise your own treatment as well). Instead, raise the entirely appropriate question that you might have a genetic condition and might benefit from consulting a genetic specialist.

Mandy asks…

Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Question’s?

I have been doing some research regarding deficiency‘s associated with Vaplroic Acid, and from what I have read there are vitamins and minerals that can be taken to reduce these deficiency‘s. In particular:
Selenium — 100-200mcg daily.
L-Carnitine — 500-1000mg three times daily.
Vitamin D — 600 IU daily.
Calcium — 200mg daily.
Vitamin B12 — 30mcg daily.
Vitamin B6 — a lower dose??
Possibly a supplement of Biotin.

I would just like to know if anybody has/is taking valproic acid and has experienced side effects such as fatigue, shakiness, hard time getting to sleep, and staying asleep, blurry vision, head ache, and has been taking the medication for more then 6 months. I am at a dosage of 250mg twice daily of Valproic Acid treating Epilepsy, having one serious seizure almost a year ago, 17 years old, 5’7, 150 lbs, and run 5km 3 days a week. If anyone has knowledge of these supplements and if they may help with these side effects i would like to know. As well are these supplement doses reasonable??, and anything else to consider with these supplements such what to mix, what not to mix?? times of day?
Another question about melatonin, is it safe to use on Valproic Acid and will it help with my sleep?
Thanks!

Vitamin D lack, or just hypovitaminosis , is undoubtedly widespread for People in america, particularly those that are living in wintry, upper environments, also as the aged population. This really is because our own potential to generate the particular vitamin lowers as we grow older.

Vitamin B3
Is a B vitamin with Nootropic effects. It is also has been noted for its use in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Vitamin B12
Is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting the DNA synthesis and regulation but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause severe and irreversible damage, especially to the brain and nervous system. Vitamin B-12 gives a great natural energy boost.

Guarana
Guarana is an herb that is rich in caffeine. Research has also shown that guarana may affect how quickly the body perceives itself to be full as well.

Bitter Orange
Bitter orange is used as a stimulant and appetite suppressant which aids in weight loss. It contains several alkaloids such as synephrine that stimulate the body’s beta-3 receptors. Activating these receptors boosts your metabolic rate and energy levels to help increase fat burning and ultimately body fat loss. It also promotes the release of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine which boost mental energy and focus while indirectly helping body fat loss.

Yohimbe Bark Extract
It is of the tryptamine chemical class with stimulant and aphrodisiac effects. It is also known for it’s thermogenic effect. Like adderall® it is classified as pycho-stimulant that has Nootropic behavior.

Choline Dihydrogen Citrate
It is a naturally-occuring ammonium salt that is found in the lipids that make up cell membranes -in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Choline is the chemical precursor or “building block” needed to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and research suggests that memory, intelligence, and mood are mediated at least in part by acetylcholine metabolism in the brain.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine
ALCAR has neuroprotective benefits in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. ALCAR plays many important roles in the body, but the most important one from a fat burning perspective is ALCAR’s role in escorting fatty acids to the cell’s mitochondria where they can be burned as fuel aiding in body fat loss.

Bacopa Extract
It has been used in India for several thousand years and is considered a “brain tonic” which enhances memory development, learning, and concentration thus fighting attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The herb shows significant psychotropic action as evidenced by excessive sleep and conformation changes in the brain as well as blood. It is also a potent antioxidant.

Acetyl-L-Tyrosine
Tyrosine is converted in the body to key biologic compounds. These compounds include epinephrine, dopamine, L-dopa, Co-Q10, and thyroid hormones.

Caffeine
Caffeine has nootropic effects, inducing positive changes in memory and learning. Both caffeine and naturally occurring caffeine found in guarana called guaranine are found in Adderllin.

Dimethylaminoethanol
DMAE is related to choline and is a biochemical precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Studies have shown an increase in vigilance and alertness, with a positive influence on mood.

White Willow Bark Extract
White willow bark extract is added because a synergy occurs whenever ingredients are combined and the specific combination of those ingredients provides a greater benefit than the individual benefits that could be realized if each of those ingredients were taken independent of each other. Also known as a natural pain reliever.

Piperine
Piperine is an extract found from black pepper and is known for it’s increased uptake of nutrients and supplements.

Vinpocetine
Is an extract found in the periwinkle plant. Vinpocetine is reported to have a cerebral blood-flow enhancing and neuroprotective effects. It is also used as a drug in eastern european countries for the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders and age related memory impairment.

Huperzine
Is naturally occurring and extracted from the Firmoss plant. Huperzine has been shown to enhance memory and learning performance in clinical trials performed on China

I hope this helped people who want to take an herbal alternative for recreational use.

admin answers:

Nice website – I was surprised at its functionality.
I was also pleased to see the ingredients listed there as well – it sounds like a dynamite combination.
I would have been happier to see a percentage or the mg of the separate ingredients for quality control.
In time the FAQs may need to be expanded to include answers about norepinephrine and serotonin and MAO inhibition
This is not a nutritional supplement for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease although some constituents most certainly are such as Piperine. Because some ingredients function as AChE inhibitors, it would be contraindicated but that is a reason for using for AD.

Robert asks…

Is Google Scholar a right scholar to refer to when working on my University essays?

admin answers:

Google Scholar is just a search engine for journals and theses. You would get the same results from the main Google search, but most likely buried in the middle of other, non-peer-reviewed articles.

It’s a great way to look up articles, but they may not all be public domain. You may have more luck with the journal databases purchased by your school’s library.

When I select the individual cell in the formula bar it reads the correct number (16.64).
Thanks!

admin answers:

Select the whole spreadsheet, and either set the decimal to the desired setting ( DD.cc ), or go into the menu bar, Click on , then , then the tab, then check “Precision as displayed.” This will allow for un-rounded answers to be displayed in your worksheet.
